Payroll or self-employed?
Some jobs pay you through payroll and some don't. Which is which?
Your first tax return
It can feel like a lot. Where do you even start?
Where you're heading matters too.
Running and assisting can put you on a different set every week. Some of you are working towards a particular role. Others have found work you enjoy and want to keep doing. Either way, each job can come with its own contract and its own way of paying you.
We'd like to hear where you are now and where you'd like to be. Getting your tax right early saves stress later, and we're happy to explain each step so you always know where you stand.

One useful answer
Do I need to register as self-employed?
If you take freelance jobs outside of payroll, you may need to. It depends on how much you earn. We'll check and sort it for you, and explain each step.

Quick questions
What if some jobs pay me through payroll?
That money has tax taken off before you're paid. We'll still include it on your tax return, so everything adds up.
Can I claim travel to sets?
You can usually claim travel to different sets for work. We'll check what counts for you.
When is the Self Assessment deadline?
For online returns, it's 31 January after the end of the tax year. We'll remind you well before then.
