For set and production designers

Tax help for set and production designers.

You build the worlds that stories happen in. We'll take care of the tax behind them.

Sound familiar?

Paid per production

Fees for each job, some in stages, some through payroll.

Tools and materials

Design software, drawing kit, tools and samples. What can you claim?

January sneaks up

You're deep in the next build, and then the deadline is close.

Every production asks something new of you.

One job might be a period drama, the next a music video or a commercial. Some designers lead a whole art department, while others work on smaller productions and do much of the hands-on work themselves. Fees, materials and timings can change from project to project.

We're keen to understand how you work and the kind of projects you want to take on next. With that in mind, we can help you keep track of costs and plan for the business you're building.

Set plans and a ruler on a screen, with notes reading Set plan, Props sourced and Build signed off.

What we do for you

We take care of it all.

  • Your tax return, done and filed

Every production added up, so you know what you owe and when.

  • Your expenses, sorted

Your design software, tools, materials and travel to sets.

  • Your books on Xero

Fees, invoices and payments in one place, set up and kept tidy.

One useful answer

Can I claim materials and tools I buy?

If the production doesn't pay you back for them, you can usually claim them. Keep the receipts and we'll do the rest.

Quick questions

Can I claim my design software?

If you use it for work, it's usually a business cost. We'll add it up for you.

Am I self-employed on every production?

Not always. It depends on the role and the contract, and some productions put you on payroll. We'll look at each one with you.

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?

It depends on how much you earn and your plans. Our free report compares the two for you.
