For illustrators

Tax help for illustrators.

You turn ideas into pictures. We'll turn your invoices and receipts into a tax return.

Sound familiar?

Fees, royalties and sales

Money from commissions, books and online shops, all paid in different ways.

Art supplies and kit

Paper, paints, a drawing tablet and the apps you work in. What can you claim?

January sneaks up

Then it's a rush to find every receipt from the year.

Making the art is one part of the job.

Illustration can mean picture books, editorial work, packaging and prints in your own online shop, sometimes all in the same month. Some illustrators work mostly to briefs and deadlines. Others create their own work and sell it directly.

How your income comes together, and where you'd like to take it, is what we want to understand first. That lets us give advice that suits the way you create and sell, and keeps the paperwork from getting in the way.

Sketches and a paintbrush on a screen, with notes reading New palette, Sketch v2 and Commission signed off.

What we do for you

We take care of it all.

  • Your tax return, done and filed

Commissions, royalties and sales added up, so you know what you owe and when.

  • Your expenses, sorted

Art supplies, your tablet, software, printing and a share of home costs if you work from home.

  • Your books on Xero

Invoices, payments and sales in one place, set up and kept tidy.

One useful answer

Do I pay tax on royalties?

Yes. Royalties from books, prints or licences are income, the same as a fee for a commission. They go on your tax return, and we'll add them up for you.

Do I need to register as self-employed?

If you sell your work or take commissions outside of a job, you may need to. We'll check and sort it for you.
