Paid in different ways
By the project, by the day or on a monthly retainer.
Subscriptions everywhere
Hosting, domains, software and plugins, plus the laptop you build on. What can you claim?
January sneaks up
You're fixing one last bug, and then the deadline is close.
Every build is different, and so is every business.
You might build websites for local firms or work on apps with a larger team. Or you might look after a handful of sites on monthly care plans. Some developers stay solo by choice. Others are slowly growing into a small agency.
Understanding how your projects and retainers fit together, and what you're aiming for next, helps us help you plan for it. That covers everything from the costs of growing to the right set-up for your business.

One useful answer
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on how much you earn and your plans. For some people a limited company means less tax, but it also means more paperwork. Our free report compares the two for you.

Quick questions
Can I claim hosting and software?
If you use them for client work, they're usually business costs. We'll add them up and keep a record.
Do I pay tax on money from clients abroad?
If you're based in the UK, money from clients abroad still goes on your UK tax return. We'll include it for you.
Do I need to charge VAT?
Only once your sales go over the VAT limit, or if you choose to register. We'll keep an eye on it for you.
