Sound familiar?

Paid in lots of ways

Cash on the night, bank transfers later, and royalties and streams when they come.

Gear and travel

Instruments, decks, speakers and getting to gigs. What can you claim?

January sneaks up

Then it's a rush to find every gig, receipt and payment from the year.

There's no standard way to make a living from music.

Some musicians gig most weekends. Others teach, write for other artists, play sessions or earn from streams and royalties. DJs might hold a residency, play weddings and private events, or travel for bookings. Often it's a mix that changes from year to year.

Tell us where your income comes from and what you want your life in music to look like. That way, our advice fits the career you're building around it.

One useful answer

Can I claim my instruments and gear?

If you use them for your work, you can usually claim them. If you also play for fun, you claim the work part. We'll work out what's fair and keep a record.
